Preserve the Art of Giving
I came across an interesting article on The Star today that really made me touched and proud. It about our late Datin Seri Endon's gift giving to the Prime Minister Department before Hari Raya. According to the article, our late Datin Seri had been doing so since Pak Lah ascended the Deputy Prime Minister position. And just before she left this world, she still take such a noble step to prepare the gift for this year. It really touched my heart because she still practices the art of giving even before she left this world.
According to Buddhism, the art of giving is about giving out without hoping for any return. From what the late Datin Seri had done, she was really some one who had been practicing this art for a long time. She had been giving out the gifts to all the staffs in the Prime Minister department for a long time, yet she didn't announce it to the public. If this news isn't reported in today paper, most of us wouldn't have found out how noble she was. She really make me feel proud because at least we once had such a person in this nearly self-centered society.
Our world today had become too self-centered. Most people will only help out if they get some benefit form the help they were bound to give. Take the tsunami which struck Indonesia and the other part of the world last year for instance. I was really disgusted when well-known, financial stable company can even called and asked what's the minimum amount of donation to enable them to get their company published in newspaper... What worng with the people?? Is contributing to relieve other people suffering need so much publicity??? I begin to wonder whether donations will ever come in if no publicity is given by all the newspaper. They are just a selfish lot!!!!!
However, the art of giving isn't really focus on material giving only. Buddhism enlarge the definition by stating that giving isn't only about material, but it also involve giving moral support and spiritually. The giving of advices, moral supports, encouragement, courage, and even giving of love can be included as the art of giving. So, even if we can't give any material as aform of donation, we can always lend a helping hand to them by giving out those things stated above.
So, let's us preserve the art of giving before our society become more and more self-centered. Even though less and less people now days possess this arts, but as long as there is some one out there who have this art in his/her art, there is still tommorrow for our world.........
